Members of the Rochester Lodge of Elks #1393 recently celebrated the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks of the United States turning 150 years old.

On February 16, 1868, a group of men got together in New York City that has developed into an organization that is now 150 years old with over 2,000 local organizations and 850,000 members throughout the country.  The Rochester Lodge has been around since 1920 and consists of an active group of more than 900 members.

According to Rochester's Exalted Ruler Gerry Skidds, “our members enjoy their position in the community and look for ways to help the citizens of Rochester. You can find us involved in serving meals to vets and the homeless, holding an annual Scout and many other events.” He further stated that many folks join for the friendships and soon find themselves involved in our good work. And many of the members are second- and third-generation Elks.

The Rochester Lodge is the second largest in the state and is proud of theirs and the state’s position in helping. Local Secretary and past Exalted Ruler Norm Gervais said that as of March 2017, approximately 65,000 hours were donated by New Hampshire Elks, which results in $2 million worth of participation in either financial or other ways of assistance.

In less than two months, the Rochester lodge has contributed more than $6,500 in value to the community, plus donations of use of the 400-seat lodge totaling up to more than $4,000.

Former Exalted Ruler Don Chesnel stated "the club is growing.  All that is required to be a member is to be recommended by a current Elk and a desire to help people." Gerry Skidds stated "there are places for everyone in the Elks.”
